Frequently Asked Questions about Senior Living
Is it expensive to live at Bergen Gardens?
Owning a home has many expenses such as property taxes, utilities, groceries, home maintenance/repair, snow removal or lawn care costs and maybe a housekeeping service. We simplify that for you and roll it all into one rent and service package that will let you rest easy and not have to coordinate everything on your own. You can't put a price tag on that!
Is Tenant Insurance a requirement to live at Bergen Gardens?
As with any rental agreement, having Tenant Insurance is a wise move to protect you and can cover the cost of replacing your personal belongings in the event of an incident on the property because, without insurance, you would have to cover these losses out-of-pocket so having this protection is highly recommended.
I don't want help yet. Do I have to take the service package?
Bergen Gardens was designed to provide support to seniors who are struggling to live at home independently but with just a few supports (like better nutrition, 24-hour support, and decreasing loneliness) they get back to health and wellbeing more quickly. We believe you should continue to experience life on your own terms and if you feel that you are still able to manage on your own, we are so glad for you, but you know we are here for you in the future should circumstances change.
If I have physical challenges is Bergen Gardens accessible and safe for me?
Bergen Gardens was designed with everyone in mind regardless of age or ability. With wider doorways, seamless transitions between flooring types, fully accessible washrooms with safety bars and a walk-in shower with a sturdy bench, just to name a few. Each kitchen sink has an area that you can sit to use and closets that have height adjustable bars to reach from sitting with lights that go on automatically to help you see what is inside.
Are there staff available at night?
Bergen Gardens has dedicated staff who are on site 24 hours per day including a nurse in case of medical emergencies and can be contacted with a push of button on your wristband or neck pendant.
Can I bring my pet with me?
Pets are welcome here! We know your animal companion means the world to you, and they can stay part of your family living here. Pets are screened for suitability and then issued a special tag that recognizes their status of being a member of the Bergen Gardens Critter Club. There is a special dog run out back for you if you need it as well as a pet wash station for your convenience. The Kilcona Off Leash Park is just a 5-minute drive away if your dog enjoys the dog park experience.
Will I still be able to host social events and parties?
Absolutely! We want you to stay connected with the people you care about: socialize in your suite, invite guests to dinner in the Friendship Center, our private dining room, reserve a larger social space like the Summit Community Center for a private event. We can help with the catering, so there is one less thing to worry about!
Can I have out of town guests stay overnight?
Nothing would be more welcome. We have a lovely offering of two (2) different Bed and Breakfast suites, the Prairie Crocus Room (1 queen size bed) or the Marigold Suite (2 twin beds). You can easily reserve one of our rooms for the night with our app, pending suite availability and it's easy to book extra meal(s) if you want to dine together.
What kinds of meal options can I expect at Bergen Gardens?
You'll never run out of choice at Bergen Gardens. You can dine on your own schedule with a take-out meal, socialize in the Heartwood Dining Room with whomever you choose, or even in the comfort of your own space with room service if you have guests. The Corner Store has ready-made heat and eat style meals, mini food kits or baked goods available all day.
The dining room will only be serving lunch and supper, but The Corner Store will have baked goods and other items available for those who want to purchase breakfast. Summer dining is also available on the Heartwood Patio where our Chef will be able to deliver a mouthwatering barbequed special of the day or a wood-fired pizza experience.
Can I bring my BBQ?
If you have a balcony, you can have a BBQ for your personal use. BBQ safety rules will be provided in our handbook and having a fire extinguisher available is required.
Is there a stove in my suite?
While there are no stoves in your suite you can use your included microwave oven, a highly recommended plug-in induction cook-top (available for purchase in our Corner Store), crock pot, or toaster oven. If you need access to a bigger kitchen, you can book our Friendship Center and cook in that kitchen. So many options!
Can I or my visitors smoke in my apartment or in the building?
We are a clean air community and that means it is safe for people with respiratory issues or have oxygen tanks and smoking is not permitted in the building. There is a designated area on the grounds for tenants. Visitors should refrain from smoking on the grounds but may smoke in their vehicle. We will also host Smoking Cessation Support through our Wellness Programming that may be of interest to you if you would like to explore that option.
Do you offer parking for me or my visitors?
Bergen Gardens is pleased to offer underground parking for those who wish to park their vehicle indoors and can be added to your package when you move into Bergen Gardens. Contact us for more information on availability and pricing. There are designated above ground visitor spaces, accessible spots (your permit tag must be displayed) as well as some limited street parking on Molson.
