Moving into a senior living community can bring plenty of change; Bergen Gardens believes that pets can make that change easier. Through its Critter Club, residents are welcome to bring their animal companions with them, allowing longstanding relationships and familiar routines to continue in their new home.

Research has shown that time spent with pets has potential benefits, including emotional support, opportunities for social connection, and reduced feelings of isolation for some older adults. Pets can also create natural opportunities for neighbours to meet one another during dog walks, in shared spaces, and while stopping to say hello to a four-legged friend.

The August Pet Parade puts that community connection front and centre. Tenants and staff will have an opportunity to show off the animals who brighten their days and spend time together around one of Bergen Gardens residents’ most popular shared interests: Their pets.

“Pets are family, and for many people, that relationship becomes even more meaningful as they get older,” said a representative for Bergen Gardens. “Our first-ever Pet Parade is really about celebrating that. We’re looking forward to bringing tenants and staff together, meeting everyone’s companions, and having some fun as a community.”

Pet-friendly living is one part of Bergen Gardens’ broader focus on creating a senior community built around choice, creativity, and well-being. Along with assisted living suites and specialized memory care, the community offers shared spaces and amenities designed to help residents continue enjoying the routines, relationships, and interests that make life feel like their own.

Bergen Gardens’ first Pet Parade will take place August 27, 2026, for tenants and staff.

Bergen Gardens, an initiative by Edison Properties, has been designed by experts to mark a new standard of quality in elder-care for Manitobans. As the first Level 3 personal care home in the province, the newly constructed Bergen Gardens offers specially designed Memory Care Cottages for those in early stages of dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.

“Bergen Gardens, named in memory of our founders, represents the first Level 3 elder care residence in the province. Providing 149 assisted living in Winnipeg and 48 memory care suites, it is an important bridge for Manitoba seniors as they transition from independent living to increasing levels of care,” said Frank Koch-Schulte, Edison Properties President. “Especially for those experiencing the onset of dementia or Alzheimer’s, Bergen Gardens provides a tailored approach that preserves independence and safety.”

Bergen Gardens is Manitoba’s first EDAC (Evidence-based Design Accreditation and Certification) Level 3 facility. This level provides an intermediate level of care with the focus of improving and prolonging periods of independence and wellness. Approximately 28-33% of Manitobans who are in personal care homes would be better served in a Level 3 setting. Following an intensive eight-year research process, including the work of 178 researchers and taking into account 175 environmental aspects, Bergen Gardens sets a new standard for personal care in Manitoba.

Offering a unique Memory Care program, Bergen Gardens as a whole forms a dementia-friendly community that takes into account the specific needs and supports that keep people safe while also actively engaged in living.

The Memory Care living area is comprised of four interconnected Cottages, each with 12 people. While each person has a private bedroom and bathroom, they share a common area with kitchen, dining and living rooms which creates a sense of community. Together, using a citizenship model, they collectively plan meals and activities. Research shows that self sufficiency and everyday routines are essential components of wellness for those living with dementia. With this in mind, residents are invited to prepare meals and do laundry — according to each person’s ability.

The people who live in the Cottages are integrated throughout the culture of Bergen Gardens and are encouraged to participate as full citizens of the community. Even the wayfinding strategy for the entire complex has been designed specifically for those with dementia. The layout invites people to stop and explore points of interest which can reduce repetitive cycles of wandering. Additionally, freedom of movement and safety is preserved with the use of wristband technology. 

At Bergen Gardens, people will find an engaging and meaningful living experience with ample community spaces, on-site amenities and activities that maintain and encourage independence.  The building features a Wellness Centre, Serenity Spa & Salon, physiotherapy, cinema, a licensed tavern, fitness room, rooftop patio, gardens and much more. Pets are also welcome.

The design and construction of Bergen Gardens is based on best practices. Bergen Gardens is a leap forward as the first modern multi-storey mass timber building in Manitoba. Thoughtful construction has included the use of warm, natural materials that contributes to lowered heart rate, stress reduction, enhanced mood, and increased sense of peace and well-being.
