Bergen Gardens, an initiative by Edison Properties, has been designed by experts to mark a new standard of quality in elder-care for Manitobans. As the first Level 3 personal care home in the province, the newly constructed Bergen Gardens offers specially designed Memory Care Cottages for those in early stages of dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.

“Bergen Gardens, named in memory of our founders, represents the first Level 3 elder care residence in the province. Providing 149 assisted living in Winnipeg and 48 memory care suites, it is an important bridge for Manitoba seniors as they transition from independent living to increasing levels of care,” said Frank Koch-Schulte, Edison Properties President. “Especially for those experiencing the onset of dementia or Alzheimer’s, Bergen Gardens provides a tailored approach that preserves independence and safety.”

Bergen Gardens is Manitoba’s first EDAC (Evidence-based Design Accreditation and Certification) Level 3 facility. This level provides an intermediate level of care with the focus of improving and prolonging periods of independence and wellness. Approximately 28-33% of Manitobans who are in personal care homes would be better served in a Level 3 setting. Following an intensive eight-year research process, including the work of 178 researchers and taking into account 175 environmental aspects, Bergen Gardens sets a new standard for personal care in Manitoba.

Offering a unique Memory Care program, Bergen Gardens as a whole forms a dementia-friendly community that takes into account the specific needs and supports that keep people safe while also actively engaged in living.

The Memory Care living area is comprised of four interconnected Cottages, each with 12 people. While each person has a private bedroom and bathroom, they share a common area with kitchen, dining and living rooms which creates a sense of community. Together, using a citizenship model, they collectively plan meals and activities. Research shows that self sufficiency and everyday routines are essential components of wellness for those living with dementia. With this in mind, residents are invited to prepare meals and do laundry — according to each person’s ability.

The people who live in the Cottages are integrated throughout the culture of Bergen Gardens and are encouraged to participate as full citizens of the community. Even the wayfinding strategy for the entire complex has been designed specifically for those with dementia. The layout invites people to stop and explore points of interest which can reduce repetitive cycles of wandering. Additionally, freedom of movement and safety is preserved with the use of wristband technology. 

At Bergen Gardens, people will find an engaging and meaningful living experience with ample community spaces, on-site amenities and activities that maintain and encourage independence.  The building features a Wellness Centre, Serenity Spa & Salon, physiotherapy, cinema, a licensed tavern, fitness room, rooftop patio, gardens and much more. Pets are also welcome.

The design and construction of Bergen Gardens is based on best practices. Bergen Gardens is a leap forward as the first modern multi-storey mass timber building in Manitoba. Thoughtful construction has included the use of warm, natural materials that contributes to lowered heart rate, stress reduction, enhanced mood, and increased sense of peace and well-being.
